Recycling Convenience Center a Success
The Erie County Recycling Program (ECRP) celebrated the Grand Opening of it’s new “Convenience Center” on May 9, 2009 as 160 Erie County residents dropped off over 29,000 pounds of electronics (e-waste) and household hazardous waste (HHW). The Convenience Center, located at 1556 West 12th St., Erie (just off Greengarden between the Bayfront & 12th), accepts a variety of electronic and hazardous waste free of charge from county residents who have pre-registered by calling 1-866-815-0016. This year’s program will conclude on Saturday October 24th and restart again in the spring of 2010.
As of June 30th, the Center has collected over 97,000 pounds of materials from 548 participants. Due to the success of the program registration for the remaining collection dates has closed. In order to accommodate those not able to participate in the Saturday collections, the ECRP is exploring different program options for the remainder of this year.
2009 Recycling Summit Wrap-Up
The 2nd Annual Recycling Summit, held June 11, 2009 at the Tom Ridge Environmental Center, was well received as over 30 municipal, institutional, and business officials involved in recycling in the county were in attendance. Featured speakers were Kurt Duska from Engineered Plastics who presented “The Business of Plastics Recycling” and Rick Schlauder of MSW Consultants who spoke about “Regionalized Waste Collection”. Don Blakesley, Erie County Recycling Coordinator, presented Erie County recycling and municipal waste data from 2008. Briefly, the 2008 data showed a decrease in the County’s recycling rate (31% to 27%) and a 5% increase in the tonnage sent to landfills. Mr. Blakesley explained that the poor economy in 2008 had a significant impact on the drop in the recycling rate and the increase in waste sent to landfills. The PowerPoint presentations can

Recycling Program Sponsors Erie Seawolves Game
On July 1st the ECRP sponsored “Recycling Night at the Ballpark” at Jerry Uht Park as the Erie Seawolves take on the Trenton Thunder. Special recycling bins will be placed around the ballpark to encourage fans to recycle their beverage containers. The ECRP is working with the ballpark to install permanent recycling bins this season.
New Bins Added To County Drop-off Recycling Sites
With Waste Management now responsible for the operation of the county’s four drop-off sites, the changeover to green WM bins has begun. The bins will have new signage applied identifying which materials are accepted. Second, each site will change to “single-stream” recycling collection from the two-stream collection previously used; therefore, residents can now place fiber and commingled containers in any bin. This is an important change to the program that will improve operational efficiencies, increase recycling access, and reduce collection costs. For more information and directions to any of the sites go to www.eriecountyrecycling.com.
